Who It's For

Perfect if you love highlights or balayage but want a softer grow-out and a more natural root. Ideal for lived-in blondes, brondes and multi-dimensional brunettes who prefer a polished yet low-maintenance look.

Great for refining brassiness, camouflaging the initial regrowth line, and blending scattered greys without committing to permanent root colour.

Duration & Appointment Timing

This service is an add-on performed during your foiling appointment. Allow an additional 20 to 35 minutes for formulation, application and processing, depending on hair length, density and desired result.

Your colourist will confirm if a root shadow and tone is needed after the foils are rinsed. It is not a permanent root colour and is not offered as a standalone root application.

Aftercare & Maintenance

Use colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner to protect the tone and gloss. Wash with lukewarm water, reduce heat styling where possible, and always apply heat protection.

To control warmth, use a purple or blue shampoo once a week, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends to avoid over-toning the root area.

Book a toner refresh every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain clarity and shine, with foil maintenance typically every 8 to 12 weeks depending on your grow-out and desired brightness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book Root Shadow & Tone without foils?
This service is designed to be added to a foiling appointment when needed. For a quick refresh between colours, a standalone gloss or toner can be booked to revive tone and shine.
Is this suitable for blending grey hair?
Yes, it softens the contrast between scattered greys and your highlights for a more natural look. If you need fuller coverage, your colourist can advise on adding a dedicated root colour.
How long does the tone last?
Typically 4 to 6 weeks, depending on hair care, washing frequency and heat exposure. Using colour-safe products and heat protection helps preserve the tone and shine for longer.
Will a root shadow make my hair look darker?
It will deepen the first few centimetres slightly to blur the highlight line, but your overall look stays bright. The mid-lengths and ends are toned to your chosen shade, so the end result is balanced and luminous, not flat.
What is a root shadow and why add it to foils?
A root shadow is a demi-permanent shade applied at the scalp area to soften the contrast between your highlights and natural base. Paired with a toner, it blends the foils, refines warmth and creates a seamless, expensive finish.
